Great pack-- can't wait to use Just bought this pack to use this winter on a couple of planned backcountry trips that will probably require some trekking. Chose this one over other packs for a few reasons: 1. several ski carrying options (vertical, diag. etc.); 2. hydration compatible; 3. spine hugging foam pads; 4. big enough for extra layers, camera, helmet stow, skins, shovel and probe, with separate waterproof pocket for the digging tools. Other packs covered these bases, but for the extra few dollars, why not get an avalung? If you're ever going to be in a situation where you might need one, you should have one. hopefully never use it, but I would feel awfully dumb if I didn't have one when I needed it. Pack sits high on your back, which transfers max load to your hips. no effect on lower body to interfere with your skiing motion. Only drawbacks: you cant bang up the avalung strap too badly, and the avalung tube reaches behind your neck, so the back of a helmet butts up against it (can't lean your neck far back). overall, great pack. highly recommended.
