good ultralight option I bought the Ion windshirt for summer backpacking, and it seems to be pretty close to ideal for that purpose. I wore it while partially sheltered by trees during a brief thunderstorm, and it did a nice job at shedding a few raindrops. I mainly have it for a light layer to wear in camp or during rest breaks. The only criticism I have so far is that the XXL is cut so short in the body that it looks really goofy on a very tall man (I am 6'10"). This doesn't really take away from the functionality of the garment, but I probably wouldn't wear this around town as a tourist, because it looks funny. I would gladly sacrifice an ounce or two of weight for a little extra length in the body.

Exactly what I wanted This was recommended by another backpacker friend of mine. I have an older DriClime Windshirt (which includes the fleece). This has served me well on many 3 season backpacking trips, but I like the flexibility of separating this into two layers. So now a thin insulating base layer and this Ion windshirt actually ends up being lighter and more flexible. I usually use this windshirt on trips where rain is not likely expected and generally for in camp or when I'm not in motion.
